Outer Shores Expeditions, providing true wilderness and cultural experiences by sail on Canada’s Pacific Coast, are proud to announce a partnership with Sierra Club BC for a pair of expedition sailings this spring that highlight the extraordinary efforts being made to ensure this spectacular and vital part of the planet remain protected.

The new partnership creates an opportunity for guests sailing aboard Outer Shores’ 70-foot classic wooden schooner Passing Cloud to experience the spectacular Great Bear Rainforest while learning more about the organization so instrumental in protecting it: Sierra Club BC.

Sierra Club BC was instrumental in bringing together multiple organizations to guarantee the protection of the Great Bear Rainforest

In 2016, following decades of protest, negotiations and planning, Sierra Club BC played a pivotal role in helping to bring together environmental organizations, provincial and First Nations governments, and the forest industry to sign the ground-breaking Great Bear Rainforest Agreements, which guaranteed 85 per cent (3.1 million hectares) of the remote region’s coastal temperate rainforest is now permanently off-limits to industrial logging. Today, the agreements represent one of the most comprehensive conservation and forest management achievements on earth and are being looked at as a model for future conservation efforts around the world.

Guests aboard Passing Cloud for Outer Shores’ May 22 to 29 and May 30 to June 6 Islands, Otters, Bears, and Ancient Forests expedition sailings will have the privilege of experiencing first-hand what makes the region so exceptional and what efforts have been made to safeguard it going forward.

Though Outer Shores had planned on one Sierra Club-featured expedition in 2017, due to popular demand – the May 30 to June 6 expedition is now nearly sold out – Captain Russell Markel and the Outer Shores crew decided to make the May 22 to 29 sailing a Sierra Club BC featured expedition as well.

Jens Wieting, a forest and climate campaigner with Sierra Club BC, will join the Outer Shores crew onboard Passing Cloud for the May 30 to June 6 expedition, presenting on his work in developing and implementing the protection agreements.

“I am incredibly excited to be joining Outer Shores Expeditions on board Passing Cloud for an adventure in the wilderness of the Great Bear Rainforest and once again experience the natural and cultural richness of the region’s First Nations territories,” says Wieting. “This will be my first visit to the region since the announcement of the full implementation of the agreements and I am looking forward to sharing with my fellow passengers the story of how this monumental accord was achieved.” Small image
