The sons of two iconic exploration pioneers – Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay – will be joined by Jeremy Lindblad, son of Sven Lindblad and grandson of Lars-Eric Lindblad, to recreate the historic 30 mile South Georgia traverse in celebration of Lindblad’s 50th Antarctic Expedition Anniversary and the ending of the Shackleton Centennial. Guy Cotter, one of the world’s leading mountaineers and Tommy Heinrich, another mountaineering legend, will join the trek team.
This spectacular 19-day adventure will include a historic rendezvous of National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Orion for the final four mile stretch of the trek – and a celebratory Explorer’s Masked Ball on Halloween. Guests will travel with the explorers before and after the trek onboard National Geographic Orion, departing Ushuaia (Argentina) on October 22, 2016 and National Geographic Explorer, departing October 24. Accomplished mountaineers are invited to submit their climbing credentials to be considered to join the entire 3-day traverse. All other guests on both ships will be invited to hike the final stretch with the mountaineers from Fortuna Bay to Stromness Bay.
Guests will walk amid stately king penguins—tens of thousands on a single beach in South Georgia; observe magnificent albatross in the Falklands, and see Magellanic penguins peeking from their burrows; hike in the footsteps of Shackleton, and hear his tale of survival; paddle a kayak amid curious fur seals, and explore in a Zodiac among the bergs. Rates begin at $15,930 per person based on double occupancy in a category one cabin and include complimentary airfare based on round-trip economy group flights Miami/Buenos Aires or Santiago, plus complimentary charter flights round-trip Explorer (Buenos Aires/Ushuaia) or Orion (Santiago/Ushuaia), subject to availability and must be ticketed by Lindblad Expeditions. Valid for new bookings only.
There are still a few spots available for those interested in joining the traverse. Contact Lindblad Expeditions CXO Trey Byus at ShackletonClimb@expeditions.com to learn what’s required.
